ThescientificnameforthetreekangarooisDendrolagus,whichisderivedfromtwoGreekwords–dendron,meaningtree,andlagos,meaninghare.Interestingly,thetreekangaroowasnotnameduntilafterthewallabyandthekangaroowerealreadynamed,whichiswhyitisnotcalleda“treewallaby”ora“treekangaroo”.TheearliestrecordednameforthetreekangarooisKélemvua,whichisthenametheTalaudpeopleofIndonesiahavebeenusingforcenturiestorefertothismagnificentanimal.
ALifeintheTreetops
Thetreekangarooisamedium-sizedanimalthatcangrowuptothreefeetinlengthandweighupto30pounds.Itsuniqueadaptationsallowittoclimbandleapfrombranchtobranchwithincredibleeaseandgrace.Forexample,thetreekangaroohaslong,sharpclawsthathelpitclingtothebarkoftrees,andastrong,musculartailthatitusesforbalance.Additionally,thesolesofitsfeetarecoveredinroughpadsthatprovidetractionandpreventslipping.
